Why You Never Want Cracks in your Pavement

While a crack may seem insignificant to begin with, every problem with asphalt pavement strength and integrity starts out with these small cracks that then grow into bigger issues. All asphalt will eventually crack, especially in colder areas. Asphalt is porous which allows moisture to seep in.  Once that water expands when frozen it causes the pavement to split and part.

In warmer areas, heat will dry out your pavement and that combined with heavy wear and tear can lead to the formation of many cracks throughout. Once a crack has formed, it will only grow larger as more moisture gets in or is sucked out and further weakens the area around the crack. Cracks generally extend far below the surface where you can’t see them, so it could be far worse than you can initially see.

Regular Charlotte Pavement Maintenance

A scheduled maintenance program for your pavement, which may include sealcoating and crack filling, will more than double the life cycle of your asphalt pavement and provide maximum curb appeal. Sealcoating and crack filling is a fraction of the cost of repairing or replacing asphalt pavement.

The key to effective crack filling and sealing is to repair and fill the cracks while they are small, as crack filling inhibits crack growth and keeps new cracks from forming. The smallest details matter and the great crew over here at SMI Paving works hard to cover each and every little detail we can.

What is Asphalt Crack Filling?

Crack filling is a more permanent solution for cracks that have been neglected for longer periods of time. This process involves using cold-patch or hot-patch asphalt to fill larger, nonworking cracks and holes that sealing won’t fully address. Crack filling is less expensive than crack sealing, but it may require more frequent treatment. Crack filling is usually performed on non-working cracks, and is considered a temporary fix.

What is Asphalt Crack Sealing?

Crack sealing is a preventative measure for cracks that are still forming. This process involves applying a hot sealant over a crack to prevent water from entering. The rubberized sealant creates a flexible layer that allows the pavement to move while still offering some protection. Crack sealing is typically used for cracks that are:

  • Less than 3⁄4 of an inch wide
  • Show very little deterioration on all sides of the crack
  • Fairly shallow

How Are Cracks Repaired?

Regardless of which paving contractor is handling filling cracks, the process is standard and does not deviate much from what’s been proven time and time again to work. It all starts with thoroughly cleaning the surface. You need all dirt, dust, grass, and other debris gone before any further work is performed.

Once the surface is totally clean, it’s ready for the crack sealant to be applied.

We’re careful to cover the cracks for as long as they may run, leaving just one part of a larger crack open to the elements could undo that crack repair in no time.

Asphalt Crack Filling and Sealing FAQs

What is the difference between asphalt crack filling and crack sealing?

Crack filling is the process of placing a non-elastic material into cracks to reduce water infiltration and reinforce the surrounding pavement. Crack sealing involves using a flexible, rubberized asphalt material that bonds to the crack walls and moves with the pavement, preventing water from entering.

Why is it important to fill or seal cracks in asphalt?

Filling or sealing cracks prevents water from penetrating the base and subbase of the pavement, reducing the risk of freeze-thaw damage, potholes, and further deterioration. This extends the lifespan of your asphalt and maintains its appearance.

How often should cracks in asphalt be filled or sealed?

Inspecting your asphalt annually and addressing cracks promptly is recommended. The frequency of crack filling or sealing depends on the climate, pavement condition, and the level of traffic.

Can any crack be filled or sealed?

Not all cracks are suitable for filling or sealing. Generally, cracks less than ¼ inch wide are too small to effectively fill or seal, while cracks wider than ¾ inch may require a different type of repair.

How long does it take for the crack filling or sealing material to dry?

Most crack filling and sealing materials dry within a few hours, but it can vary based on the material used, temperature, and humidity. It’s best to check the manufacturer’s recommendations for specific drying times.

Will crack filling or sealing make my pavement look brand new?

While crack filling and sealing can greatly improve the appearance of your pavement by making cracks less visible, it won’t make it look brand new. These treatments are maintenance measures rather than cosmetic solutions.

How does weather affect crack filling and sealing?

Weather plays a significant role in the effectiveness of crack filling and sealing. Ideal conditions are dry and warm. Rain can prevent the material from adhering properly, and cold temperatures can prevent it from setting or cause it to crack.
